DEADMAU5 AND US

The digital deejay is KING.

London, ON no longer a party virgin!
A party so sophisticated, that even mother nature couldn't F with her.

Hosted by Premier Productions and The London Music Hall, Saturday October 02's 'Tent Party, rocked London, Ontario in historical fashion.

BDM BLOG | DEADMAU5 from BDM on Vimeo.

Was this the biggest outdoor event in our Ltown's ever? I dunno, but it was good, real good.  Yeah, there were people there that I never imagined dancing or kibitzing with, people who gave my camera the middle finger, but in good fun! Behind purple, "UWO" chants, W thumbs, and custom Deadmua5 masks, it was all about the music and the feeling of sharing something with a ton of peeps. It was like raving with your cousin David (the Hugo model) in Montreal inside Expo Stadium.  Plus, wouldn't you go back to university or college if you could for just one homecoming weekend?

An estimated 4,000 music fans and lost frosh attended Saturday's 'Tent Party'.  Without a doubt, this night proved that house music and dub step are in high demand in Canada and around the world.  "It's blowing up," Mark Russell of Premier Productions enthusiastically tells our team.
Imagine a collage of rich and bass-Y beats that come at the brain like visual cues in a game of DDR: today's digital deejay manipulates and crosses audio layers at will.  One rule up and coming house deejays points out 'Tent Party' opener Bryan Wong, "pay your dues and master the art of the mix".

Our team will dedicate an entire 24 minute show to this event this winter on London Calling IV.  In music terms, we see the 'Tent Party' as an example of the popularity and creativity associated with house.  Is this the ideal live experience?  You'd have to be there to know.  If you weren't, we'll do our best to show you what exactly went on in that tent.

Let’s face it,  London Loves LOLA.
Maybe its’ the feeling you got when you finally pieced together the verses of  The Kink’s 1970 song by the same name, combined with a 2000 and something LULU Lemon advertising campaign.  Maybe its the two-syllable thing.

If you had the pleasure of re-discovering London, Ontario’s Victoria Park September 18th-22nd, LOLA moved you in ways a butt-clinching rock song and tight leggings never could.

London Ontario Live Arts opened with Wild Domestic who crushed the first of four afternoon sets. The local band altered songs and speed changes to keep regular fans guessing and newcomers assuming, “If this is the first band of the event, we’re in for a good time”.  I’m thinking about one of those RV’s for next September. Was the RV open to all media?  Wild Domestic added some serious synth to their guitar humm’in - look out for the band when they appear on London Calling Season IV.

Flashback to the night before: for a scheduled 5:45PM interview with Zeus. Zeus (aka Jason Collett's touring band courtesy of Arts & Crafts) are into ninjas, Phil Collin’s covers, sleek moustaches, and are highly competitive red ass players. BDM plans to post the entire interview, raw, unedited, and in yo face real soon.  In the meantime, click here for a sneak audio visual peak:
Zeus, who is currently touring with Jamie Lidell, opened the first of three LOLA ‘after party’ nights.  The band eased through crowd sing alongs like How does it feel, Marching through your head, and Kindergarten. Band mates swapped the mic for keys and strings while their drummer batted beats out at the London Music Club

Just when you were running out of beer money, the night was taken to new spiritual heights, when Lidell laid down soulful track into beat box and back round again. For the goods on Lidell.

Before Born Ruffians could steal your future-girlfriend's heart, LOLA organizers built the momentum with the dual-stage-approach (not official festival lingo). As one band was finishing on the main stage, another was plugging in and preparing to continue the flow of music never played on commercial radio. The stage consideration was a positive step for LOLA in terms of keeping crowds moving and augmenting sounds in the park.  The ‘conflict resolution’ theme and media installations were thought provoking.

The performance by Tony Conrad on the Transmedia Stage was a mental marathon, but the guy had a 20+ foot slide guitar and a violin that he stole from the Tin Man (Not true). Big props to BDM crew Pat and Brit for sticking out the entire performance.  This is what LOLA is about: challenging musical convention, form, and sweaters Bill Cosby would be proud of.

Big shout outs and London thank yous to Fond of Tigers, Caribou (interview content is coming!), London emcee and visual artist Thesis (aka James Kirkpatrick), Minotaurs who will also be featured on the TV show, and the band from Philadelphia who’s lead singer roamed with a wireless mic into on-lookers to lay with LOLA fans.  If you didn’t see Born Ruffians, slap yourself.  Take Vampire Weekend and toss out the shy college rock-boy, singing under trees on campus thang, add some maple bacon, raw back-up vocals and Born Ruffians are on your next playlist.  Born Ruffians are the kind of Canadian band your kids will end up listening to thanks, in part, to festivals like LOLA. | AJS

LOLAfest | JAMIE LIDELL

Jamie Lidell | London Music Hall | Photo By: Brittknee Withikaye
We’ll joiN YO chURCh!

Cross the DNA
of Otis Redding, Prince, Justin Timberlake, Biz Markie and Lionel Richie, ADD an R&B fusion band that harmonizes like the choir from Forest Gump, and MULTIPLY this by the communal feeling that no one would rather be anywhere else and you’re front and center for Jamie Lidell night one at LOLAfest.

If you like BIG beats and layers of soulful harmonies, this cat has you covered.  Decked out in an arm-pitless and ‘dazzling’ sequined jacket that would have Sir Elton drooling, Lidell lives up to the pressure of sporting something so sleek.  How does he do it?  Straight up soul by the pound; that’s how, doggies.  Forget indie, or underground as hip hoppers tend to refer to it for just a minute: Lidell has the kind of star quality and humility that has the emotional force to connect generations.

If you’re a downer, you might not like Lidell. On second thought, after listening to a handful of bass-y beats, you’ll need turn you’re life around because time-is-a-tick'in and up tempo, goosebump inducing soul music is in demand. Liven up your soul and join Jamie Lidell & Co on cloud nine.

Enjoy the video content and beware of the bass when you be rock’in dis for you’re co-workers.  Jamie Lidell will appear on London Calling Season IV, EP II when the team presents their findings from LOLAfest.

Some people's parents are doing it right.

The Pack A.D. Interview

Becky Black, Maya Miller The Pack A.D. | London Music Club |
I'm ashamed to say I had to opt out of seeing this duo live tonight at the London Music Club. Judging by their album We Kill Computers (2010) I can imagine their set is (probably happening right now) going to be fierce and powerful. So anyways, while Drew and Pat are hard at work video taping their favourite songs from the set, I'm here to share some of the interview we had with them today.

Stay tuned for London Calling Season IV to see more from the interview!

APK GOES LIVE

APK Live | SEP 10/10 | Photo: Brittknee Withikaye
“It's affirmation that we have a ‘scene’ here in London.”

This weekend, if only temporarily, London Ontario got its groove back. No, I’m not talking about the fresh batch of students lined up along Richmond Row or groups of over-grown men cruising for MMA battles –  I’m talk’in bout the resurrection of the APK.
Unlike major North American cities when London, Ontario loses a reputable music-arts venue, socially speaking: the affects can be ugly. In too short a period, our creative community looked on, open jawed at the closure of the original Alex. P Keaton, The Embassy and The ‘Wick’ (the latter two burning to the ground).

However, we now find ourselves on the verge of 2011 (Leaves will fall and Halloween will be followed by relentless Christmas jingles) and the times are a chang’in.  The closure of three venues known for their support of local acts and for bringing unbelievable underground artists to our city was no doubt tough times, but we’ve dealt with it and we’re better for it.

Over the past year and a half, people have found comfort in places like The Morrissey House (Dundas, and Waterloo S.), The Black Shire (Talbot and Dufferin) and Gigs (Talbot and Carling) those connected to the scene have craved a sizable DJ/Concert venue to better support us. Call The Office will out live time  but presently London needs more

The Nite Owl, 353 Talbot, is a reminder that when something falls apart there’s a new vision waiting to take flight. Imagine tall ceilings lined with a sharp, red felt pattern bordering the entire rectangular shape of the venue, a bartender who looks like he’s the lead in a punk band chatt’in up regulars wrapped around a sleek bar and you’re at the Night Owl.  I wanted to touch the wall fabric, but I didn’t risk being pinned to it like a dart.  The drinks were strong and the shape inside is cozy, yet stylish.

The London Music Club
(Colborne and Queen) and The London Music Hall (Queens Ave.) are similar in name and approach.  The owners of these respective venues work in tandem, say when one act works better for the size or ‘feel’ of one place over one room inside another venue.  Both venues have multiple rooms for various types of events.  So mad I missed Pennywise at LMH.  Look out for some poetry slam com’in live from The London Music Club this season on London Calling and Deadmau5 at LMH.

APK Live
(on Wellington & York) opened its doors
on Friday September 10th, 2010. The event featured Krupke, Wild Domestic, and A Horse and His Boy. The place is gorgeous: There's tons of space for dancing and deejays, plus there are really comfy booths for parties – the tables alone are conversation pieces! Although the menu was limited for the first night, they still serve quality beer and pub grub. We can also report that there is not a trace of pink paint in either bathroom.

I get the same positive feeling when the awkwardness subsides at a wedding or family reunion. Once you look past some of the goofy suits, and frilly dresses, you realize how much you missed those close to you. Friday night was what a number of us needed: a reminder that the creativity in these people can heal us from our over-simplified and cruel world.

Attention: London’s creative community, we look forward to working with you this season!

EAGLES OF DEATH METAL | NXNE

"Don't leave your girl round me."

Eagles of Death Metal are bananas.  Not only do they slay your favourite tracks, moving swiftly between them and crushing solos where need be, occasionally they open up songs for further inspection. Jesse Hughes and company know how to work a crowd.  Picture what would have happened if Pierre Trudeau learned to play the drums back in the 70's and ditched politics altogether. Running with this lie, maybe Truedeau learns how to play guitar later in life ...  grows a dirty-doggin-handle-bar stache and that's the kind of charisma you can count on from Hughes night in night out.  If you've heard one Eagles of Death Metal, you can attest that most of the tracks revolve around sex, broken relationships, and timeless rock and roll.   These guys don't take themselves too seriously.  If you care about your girlfriend DO NOT bring her to this show.  She will end up on stage, then back stage, and eventually out of your life.

DE LA | NXNE

Few hip hop bands deserve the title 'Legends'

De la soul played a free show on the (closing night) of NXNE and they threw down.  From 3 Feet High and Rising, De La Is Dead, to The Grind Date, De La threw down the classics and brought the thunder with tracks like ROCK CO KANE FLOW.   I saw De La perform the same act to close out Pitchfork two years back and all three Plugs have not lost their touch.  Thanks so much to NXNE for the media hook up and to my boy Adrian (A-train) for sweet talk'in the media personal.  This is what happens when good luck be on your side homies.

Oodles of O's,

BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE | ISLAND SHOW

There’s happiness, there’s ecstasy and then there's the feeling you get when you go see Broken Social Scene in concert. For those of you who’ve caught these Indie- juggernauts from TO live, you know you’re always at a loss of words when describing what you’ve just taken in. As for those who haven’t seen them...well if you want to see an overwhelming orchestra of organic alt-rock, if you want to hear songs that will have you conflicting the conception of reality and what’s all around you, if you want hear the sound of a city, watch something like nothing else on earth, and reach a stage of noise-Nirvana, go see Broken Social Scene.

Back on June 19th, BSS returned to the Toronto Islands with a bunch of friends to give fans what they have long been waiting for. It’s been five years since the group released their self-titled hit, and they were more than excited to share their new release, Forgiveness Rock Record.

Following acts like Beach House and Band of Horses(who both performed incredibly entertaining sets but were simply blown away by the phenomenon that is BSS’ live show ) BSS were proud to share their new record with fans. Not shying away from the old hits; “7/4 Shoreline”, “Lover’s Spit”, “Stars and Sons”, “Cause=Time”, BSS offered almost a dozen songs off the 14-track new LP. This was an island you wouldn’t mind being stranded on.

As mentioned, since the boys and girls in Broken Social Scene were home they opened their little black books and called up everyone in it. Musicians from other Canadian bands like Metric, Death From Above 1979 and The Stills joined the crew, and even everyone’s favourite, Feist was even on stage a fair amount. In fact, at one point I counted 17 people on stage rocking out, singing, hugging and laughing! Trombones, Trumpets (plural, very plural!), Violins, basses, Guitars(sometimes four or five going!), drums and percussion, tambourines, bass, and even a French Horn.

It was a party! A party thrown by Broken Social Scene, who couldn’t have been better hosts to thousands of strangers. Strangers who didn’t hesitate to jump on a fairy and cross lake Ontario(and pay $10 for a Burger!). Strangers who didn’t feel like strangers. They felt like family. They felt like they were a part of something. Something uplifting and powerful. Something that cannot be described. So stop reading my ramble and go see them for yourself. There is no possible way you will be disappointed. There is no possible way you will be the same person afterward.

SLEIGH BELLS DELIVERS!

"got my 'a' mchns on the tbl, got my 'b' mchns in the drwr"

I first discovered Sleigh Bells (duo Derek E. Miller and Alexis Krauss) back in December09 and at this time all they had were 4-5 singles that all sounded like live-to-tape recordings from local sets. Though, a little underproduced and over-distorted A/B Machines instantly got me scrounging random blog entries on Hypem to track down as many recordings from this band as possible. Without a produced full length album, and hailing from Brooklyn, NY they officially became my MOST ANTICIPATED album/live-set for 2010.

When Pitchfork Fest turned away from us on media accreditation (until the last minute), I pretty much gave up on my mission to see Sleigh Bells live; but of course, upon the release of their album they embarked on a North American Tour which brought them to me last night in Toronto.
As much as  I would love to see their small-venue, floor-level-set in Brooklyn, there's no way I would be able to 'tough'-out such an event, and so I settled for the 'bat cave club' atmosphere of the Phoenix in TO. Despite the fact that we stood in one spot waiting 2 hours for the band to come on stage, they really made me forget the less-than courteous people around me and remember why I bought the ticket in the first place.

Their set was packed full off non-stop energy. I'm pretty sure they played every track on the album, plus one I've never heard before. Alexis Krauss lives and breathes every single beat on that stage, without missing a key. They might have a 'drum machine' taking care of those hard beats, and back vocals but those screams you hear on the tracks are NOT samples, they are hers and they are live.
It's duo's like this that leave me wondering where all of that performance art even sprouts from, are they freaks of nature? Nah they're just from Brooklyn and know how to party hardy.

[So, the iphone is clearly not made for bassy live-tunes. Maybe Apple should look into this. This was the best clip I had that didn't drop out audio completely.]

After listening to the LQ singles for 5 months, their full length was a real 'treat'. When I first listened to it, all tuned up, cleaner, louder and way less distorted, it felt like I was plugging my headphone jack into a light board. (This may or may not be a result of PC'ing for the majority of my teens and watching all my music on Windows Media Player). As I'm not the best at explaining the way music sounds, but what I saw was explosive saturated rainbow patterns encoded with the hard beats and pull backs that make you want to do nothing but rock out.

Favourite part: In the reproduction of A/B Machines, which is still purposefully distorted,  they've created a blend of noise that makes the guitar sound as though it's being sucked from your ears rather than blasting them to 'deaf'. This contrast just makes you want it harder for longer.

Beforehand the only way I could pinpoint what their music made me see were keywords like "bullies, hard, playground music." Like the stuff your high-school bully kicked your best friend's ass to, after school by the hopscotch on the elementary grounds.

Now that I'm familiar with their album art work, their sound has taken on a much bigger, tougher, team/teen-spirit feel, like the stuff cheerleading acrobats choreograph their sets to.  ------>>>>>>

Either way, Sleigh Bells does not sound like Christmas, so pick it up, party hard this summer, and learn how to fight before it's back to school!

THE MORNING BENDERS | PITCHFORK TV

"we are so smooth now"

If you haven't already picked up the latest from the Morning Benders you are sadly missing out on some of the BEST mood music of the summer.

I've been listening to BIG ECHO off and on since March, so at this point it's going to clearly define a good chunk of my existence in 2010; we'll call it a "nostalgic investment".
Lately, with the intensity of the summer weighing in, (air conditioner-less) it seems that this album becomes more of a fresh breeze, and a splash of cold water, just like the cover art.

Anyways...

Pitckfork.tv brings you a beautifully pieced live-to-tape set for the first track of Big Echo, "Excuses"

PICK OF THE WEEK | THE DRUMS

"Down, down, baby, down by the roller coaster. Sweet, sweet baby, I'll never let you go."

As their Summertime! EP [SEP 09] fell only one month short of summer last year, The Drums are back with their first full length just in time for the hot months of 2010.
Their self-titled album was released back in May, but as the weather gets warmer by the day, and the sun sets slower every night The Drums become the theme to one of this summer's hottest flings.

"Forever", being the frequent term of the album, days and days, forever and evers, carrying the way every summer can feel infinite so long as you spread yourself as thin as you can over best friends, lovers, drugs, booze, beaches, parties etc. Because in the summer, somehow every day is your day off; At least it feels like it with this album playing in the back of my mind. If there's one album that reminds me of all the best amenities of summer, it's this one.

Bringing it down a notch from my springtime pick of the week, Surfer Blood's Astro Coast ['surfer sounds' from the 90's], The Drums carry an intimate, and more romantic 'summer fun' appeal. Kind of like the Beach Boys [but not at all]. All I can say is it's been a while since I've had the urge to go on picnic dates, hold hands, lay on the beach and fall asleep down by the water. I can only hope that come winter time that a full listen of this album brings all of these happy thoughts turned to memories.

I'm nearly ashamed to say I didn't know about this band until a couple weeks ago. After watching a series of their music videos, front man, Jonathon Pierce has already stolen my heart with his fancy footwork [in "Best Friend"] and his reserved dance moves [in "Forever and Ever Amen"] tricking me into thinking "he's going to kiss me...oh wait, he's just dancing." ;)

If you're not digging the sounds right away, check out some of the videos they've made.
Forgive me but this is just a 'visual' response: Vampire Weekend meets Psychedelic Furs. Once they have a chance to represent their sense of style, and their fun-fancy-free summertime in the city by the beach boys, you'll be hooked.

LC 03 EP 07 | ARMPIT

PICK OF THE WEEK | PLANTS AND ANIMALS LA LA LAND

Montreal's Plants and Animals sharpen their skills, but will it help the Hab's?

If Montreal's Plants and Animals made it a goal to up the rock and roll ante with their latest release, LA LA Land - mission accomplished.

The album is full of surprises and wonder, starting with unfamiliar, up tempo guitar riffs on Tom Cruz, which pull back melodically into Swinging Bells.

This pattern of hitting you hard with accessible, singable and very danceable three-piece rock, followed by 'come-downs' continues throughout LA LA Land.  This pattern makes the work unpredictable and emotional - something I know I will continue to reach for, especially when people stop in for din din.  Track three, American Idol, which I hope Warren C. Spicer is serious about reveals that he wants to be '... your American Idol'.  I'd watch.  Warren would stick it to those sheep.  Question though, who would he cover?  Himself?

There's something special about Warren's voice.  He transforms ordinary words into bright episodes full of open doors, which he kicks down to take his game that much further.  This was also true for the bands live performance.  He seemed to be barely opening is mouth, yet the enter venue was filled with this sweet sonic sounds.  This was cool cause you could really be anywhere in the venue and hear them well.

Our BDM team travelled to Toronto to see P&A play a free show at the Horseshoe for the launch of LA LA Land.

LC 03 EP 03 | BLACKDOG | PRODUCER'S NOTES

woRdsworth

Like a good mix tape, our third episode hits you hard - just before track four blows your brain.  What is it with tracks four and five on almost 90% of the music that has been made in the last 45 years?  These are important things to consider my friends.  So, as visual and audio curators we are preparing you for the storm of gorilla music videos and chaos we encounter around musically gift mofos.

We are please to present Black Dog feat. Maestro.  I was out of town, however we got some help from the Top Billin camp who scored us an interview with Canada's all time selling MC, the day he was nominated for a Gemini.  Big Tings.  Our super camera operator slash filmmaker, Sean Stanley, trucks it to Bayfield to complete the hip hop / black dog show where he shot segments and interviews with Ghettosocks, Tool Shed members, Fritz Da Cat, and MORE!!!

I still remember rocking the Symphony In Effect (by Maestro) cassette at my friend Afonso's after school for three weeks, while his Portuguese family waited patiently for us to come downstairs and eat.

Thanks for all the support we have been getting from all the artists we have been shooting Gorilla Videos with.  For more on GV, hit DIS BUTTON.
