The experience of Craven Cottage is not that of a bar, nor a pub patio. I wouldn't extend a resemblance to a house party either, (from what I've seen in my 'college years'). No, Craven Cottage was a true feature this summer; a place to gather round friends, and friends-of-friends to have drinks, conversations, and watch live music.
Located pretty well out-of-sight (if you're not a frequent bike trail'er), on the outskirts of the downtown core, Craven Cottage hosted a few get-togethers. I placed myself there for a show July 4th 2011, to see Lauren Mann and the Fairly Odd Folk, feat. Reeves, and took some pictures, and captured some songs. Here's one.

P adds comedic element to NXNE - Awkward street report Pat the 'riff'in' Tiffin might not have a local comedy bar to test his latest jokes, but he's got this segment and its pretty good. NXNE welcomes comedy to their historically music dominated festival and, in the process, Pat snuck his way into the festival - accredited and all.

The band may have thought that we were from London, England [London Calling, Joe Strummer = misleading] but we got the dang interview. Dan and wife/band mate, Alexei, clearly enjoy cigarettes, big beats, and they are also the hottest couple I've ever seen. And, with the release of their third full length Sound Kapital [2011], Handsome Furs are more relevant than ever before.
In the clip, the couple/band talk about where they find the inspiration for their music; from the UK, to Beijing. Been-there-done-that, and bringing it home.

Maybe its’ the feeling you got when you finally pieced together the verses of The Kink’s 1970 song by the same name, combined with a 2000 and something LULU Lemon advertising campaign. Maybe its the two-syllable thing.
If you had the pleasure of re-discovering London, Ontario’s Victoria Park September 18th-22nd, LOLA moved you in ways a butt-clinching rock song and tight leggings never could.
London Ontario Live Arts opened with Wild Domestic who crushed the first of four afternoon sets. The local band altered songs and speed changes to keep regular fans guessing and newcomers assuming, “If this is the first band of the event, we’re in for a good time”. I’m thinking about one of those RV’s for next September. Was the RV open to all media? Wild Domestic added some serious synth to their guitar humm’in - look out for the band when they appear on London Calling Season IV.
Flashback to the night before: for a scheduled 5:45PM interview with Zeus. Zeus (aka Jason Collett's touring band courtesy of Arts & Crafts) are into ninjas, Phil Collin’s covers, sleek moustaches, and are highly competitive red ass players. BDM plans to post the entire interview, raw, unedited, and in yo face real soon. In the meantime, click here for a sneak audio visual peak:
Zeus, who is currently touring with Jamie Lidell, opened the first of three LOLA ‘after party’ nights. The band eased through crowd sing alongs like How does it feel, Marching through your head, and Kindergarten. Band mates swapped the mic for keys and strings while their drummer batted beats out at the London Music Club.
Just when you were running out of beer money, the night was taken to new spiritual heights, when Lidell laid down soulful track into beat box and back round again. For the goods on Lidell.
Before Born Ruffians could steal your future-girlfriend's heart, LOLA organizers built the momentum with the dual-stage-approach (not official festival lingo). As one band was finishing on the main stage, another was plugging in and preparing to continue the flow of music never played on commercial radio. The stage consideration was a positive step for LOLA in terms of keeping crowds moving and augmenting sounds in the park. The ‘conflict resolution’ theme and media installations were thought provoking.
The performance by Tony Conrad on the Transmedia Stage was a mental marathon, but the guy had a 20+ foot slide guitar and a violin that he stole from the Tin Man (Not true). Big props to BDM crew Pat and Brit for sticking out the entire performance. This is what LOLA is about: challenging musical convention, form, and sweaters Bill Cosby would be proud of.
Big shout outs and London thank yous to Fond of Tigers, Caribou (interview content is coming!), London emcee and visual artist Thesis (aka James Kirkpatrick), Minotaurs who will also be featured on the TV show, and the band from Philadelphia who’s lead singer roamed with a wireless mic into on-lookers to lay with LOLA fans. If you didn’t see Born Ruffians, slap yourself. Take Vampire Weekend and toss out the shy college rock-boy, singing under trees on campus thang, add some maple bacon, raw back-up vocals and Born Ruffians are on your next playlist. Born Ruffians are the kind of Canadian band your kids will end up listening to thanks, in part, to festivals like LOLA. | AJS

EAGLES OF DEATH METAL | NXNE
Eagles of Death Metal are bananas. Not only do they slay your favourite tracks, moving swiftly between them and crushing solos where need be, occasionally they open up songs for further inspection. Jesse Hughes and company know how to work a crowd. Picture what would have happened if Pierre Trudeau learned to play the drums back in the 70's and ditched politics altogether. Running with this lie, maybe Truedeau learns how to play guitar later in life ... grows a dirty-doggin-handle-bar stache and that's the kind of charisma you can count on from Hughes night in night out. If you've heard one Eagles of Death Metal, you can attest that most of the tracks revolve around sex, broken relationships, and timeless rock and roll. These guys don't take themselves too seriously. If you care about your girlfriend DO NOT bring her to this show. She will end up on stage, then back stage, and eventually out of your life.

DE LA | NXNE
Few hip hop bands deserve the title 'Legends'
De la soul played a free show on the (closing night) of NXNE and they threw down. From 3 Feet High and Rising, De La Is Dead, to The Grind Date, De La threw down the classics and brought the thunder with tracks like ROCK CO KANE FLOW. I saw De La perform the same act to close out Pitchfork two years back and all three Plugs have not lost their touch. Thanks so much to NXNE for the media hook up and to my boy Adrian (A-train) for sweet talk'in the media personal. This is what happens when good luck be on your side homies.

LC 03 EP 03 | BLACKDOG | PRODUCER'S NOTES

Like a good mix tape, our third episode hits you hard - just before track four blows your brain. What is it with tracks four and five on almost 90% of the music that has been made in the last 45 years? These are important things to consider my friends. So, as visual and audio curators we are preparing you for the storm of gorilla music videos and chaos we encounter around musically gift mofos.
We are please to present Black Dog feat. Maestro. I was out of town, however we got some help from the Top Billin camp who scored us an interview with Canada's all time selling MC, the day he was nominated for a Gemini. Big Tings. Our super camera operator slash filmmaker, Sean Stanley, trucks it to Bayfield to complete the hip hop / black dog show where he shot segments and interviews with Ghettosocks, Tool Shed members, Fritz Da Cat, and MORE!!!
I still remember rocking the Symphony In Effect (by Maestro) cassette at my friend Afonso's after school for three weeks, while his Portuguese family waited patiently for us to come downstairs and eat.

LC SSN 03 EP 02 | HOLY FUCK
Last week we packed Episode 1 full of great tunes and interviews with three awesome Canadian bands including a two-part profile on Elliott Brood.
This week's profile is Holy Fuck, inspiring the theme to Episode 3.
Thankfully, because this is the Internet, all of the NEW segments to this re-mastered episode will remain uncensored, and COMMERCIAL FREE.
In this episode we've got LIVE footage of Holy Fuck's performance at Phog Fest last summer. That Guy is BACK to ask people what makes them go "Holy Fuck" Boss Man makes a special appearance. Josh the Intern gets a good rant in about our Producer Drew. For LC Concert Series we're featuring awesome footage of Kings of Leon performing at the JLC that will make you go "Holy Fuck!" The sound is so crisp! Pat is also back out on da street asking the people of Richmond Row what their favourite curse word is. Just to make it easy for you, I cut it out of the line-up and posted it as a stand alone.
